Over the last few months my collection of plants has definitely increased. Consider this my Beginners Guide to Indoor plants and the 5 that I suggest as a Beginner.
I am a plant Mom to 17 plants, my first plant that I ever purchased was a Cactus. She was huge and I named her big Mama. Unfortunately, I couldn’t bring her to live with me in LA but I have built up my plant family since then. I buy my plants from various places. Home Depot, Lowe’s, Melrose Trading Post and I also have a Plant Expert here in a LA named Darren who delivers the best plants! Tip: Also if you buy a plant from Home Depot or Lowe’s keep the receipt, if your plant dies you can return/exchange it for a new one. I have had friends do this. Haven’t had to use this myself just yet.
My usual limit for plant shopping is $40 and under especially because I like to invest in nice potters from Homegoods and Target. I’ve done a great job so far staying under my limit. Amazon is also another option for really nice affordable plant pots. Once outside opens back up we will have the luxury of buying pots from more than one store.
Let’s get into the meat of this post. What are the best Indoor plants for beginners:
- Snake Plant (Sansevieria Trifasciata)- thrive in any lighting conditions and they do great with not a lot of care. Water it every 2-3 weeks or longer. Snake plants are known to be highly resistant to pests which is great for your home and the other plants that you may have. This plant works great in absorbing high amount of carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. Snake plants are perfect for bedrooms because they purify the air. I purchased my snake plant from Ikea for $8. But they can be purchased at most nurseries or stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s.
- Chinese Money Plant (Pilea Pepermioides)- The Chinese money plant is one of my absolute favorites. I purchased my Chinese Money plant at Trader Joe’s for $9. This plant enjoys indirect sunlight and you should only water your plant when the soil is completely dry. It took me a minute to learn the best care for the Pilea, but now my baby is flourishing.
- Monstera (Monstera deliciosa)- The Monstera is natural air purifier and prefers indirect sunlight. I put my Monsterra in the corner of my living room and it gets great indirect sunlight. You should only water your Monsterra once the soil is completely dry. You should repot your plant shortly after purchasing. Make sure that the pot not only has drainage holes but is also bigger than the current pot.
- Pothos (philodendron)- The Pothos plant will thrive in any room, but should be kept away from full sunlight. I purchased this plant recently and I can’t wait for it to start grow longer and sweep the floor. Only water this plant once the soil is dry.
- Cactus & Succulents- Cacti and Succulents love sunlight but not too much. They like dry and warm climate and don’t require much watering. When it comes to pots, avoid glass. Cacti and Succulents like clay or ceramic pots and need to be repotted every year. I have not repotted any of my cacti yet because they aren’t the easiest to repot but it’s on my list of things to do.
Being a Plant Mom is no easy feat especially being a mom of 17. I am learning each and every plant as I go. One tip I will mention is to invest in Neem Oil Spray it’s perfect to rid your plants of any pests and larvae. Talk to and love your plants and they’ll love you back. I hope this post is helpful for all the beginner Plant moms and dads! Drop your questions in the comments!
