Imposter syndrome is a real thing that all people deal with on a daily basis. I often talk myself out doing certain things because I feel unqualified or less experienced. Even though that is far from the truth those are the negative thoughts that fill my mind.
How you overcome Imposter syndrome is the most important aspect of this blog post. Here are 5 Ways to Overcome Imposter syndrome:
Acknowledgement. The first step to overcoming Imposter syndrome is acknowledging that you even have it and even talking with close friends about these feelings. It will make a huge difference. You will most likely find that you aren’t alone and that Imposter Syndrome is very common. Being able to talk about it with other people will be freeing.
Speak positively. When the fraudulent thoughts enter your mind you have to immediately replace them with positive thoughts or even affirmations. This has been very helpful to me. Find affirmation audio via YouTube, Spotify or Apple Music so that you can listen to it often.
If you are unsuccessful at something, give yourself credit for trying. Having ideas, creating a plan and making strides to achieve them is hard work. You should never discount your efforts to achieve something you set out to do. Sometimes it takes a few tries. At the end of the day, give yourself credit for trying. Dust yourself off and try again.
Visualize success. Take a minute to visualize yourself being the successful person that you want to be. What is that person thinking, doing and feeling? Mentally putting yourself in that space can help tremendously when it comes to your daily habits and thoughts.
Fake it until you make it. There will be times that on paper you aren’t qualified for a gig or an opportunity. Sometimes the best way to gain experience is by taking those chances and learning from mistakes or gaining new skills from those experiences. Being a creative I have had various conversations with people who started from the bottom. Their biggest advice to me is to “fake it til you make it”. Even if you aren’t an expert at something yet, just getting your foot in the door to learn more is the best part.
I believe these tactics will be very helpful, they truly help me overcome Imposter Syndrome on a daily basis.
