I’m back from Tulum, Mexico and I couldn’t be more upset about it. Me and my friend Melissa Chanel planned this trip so that we could get away from the day to day hustle and bustle to relax, eat, drink and lay out without worries. This trip was everything and more! We stayed a total of four days and three nights but not long enough !
When it comes to planning trips I gravitate more towards Airbnbs than hotels because they tend to be cheaper. I found a beautiful Airbnb in the heart of Tulum called the Highline for less than $100/night. It was actually more around $77/night, which is very reasonable. King size bed, a balcony and a kitchen.. let’s not forget our 50” TV equipped with Netflix. Not only does it have those amenities, theres even a infinity pool that was breathtaking! There are 10 or more rooms at this hotel/airbnb so you shouldn’t have a problem booking it. The hosts are super helpful and genuine, that made our experience a great one. Check out The Highline and the great amenities they have to offer.
Get some Grub:
We tried a handful of restaurants while in Tulum, majority being Mexican cuisine which I could eat everyday.
Breakfast-
We ate at Azafran This meal was very light and slightly different from a traditional American breakfast. Bagels, Bacon and fresh watermelon juice were just a few items that we ate.
Another place we tried out was a local Juice and bowl shop called Matcha Mama they specialize in fruit bowls and fresh juice, so it was another light and yummy breakfast. Ended up getting an acai bowl filled with tons of nuts, berries and acai.
Lunch/Dinner-
Mateo’s-An outdoor restaurant with good vibes, good music and Great food! We ate here two nights in a row because the food was just that good. The chicken burrito and Pico de gallo was a HIT!
Posada Margherita– A tasty pizza spot, thats another great choice for lunch or dinner. We asked our waiter what he recommended and went with it. One word, delicious! It was the “Salisccia Rucola Grana” pizza. You won’t regret it!
Places to Vist:
Market- You’ll definitely want to check out the market to grab souvenirs for yourself and family. Just an FYI most shops have the same stuff so it’s best you try and haggle if you can! Melissa and I grabbed some really cute stuff while in Tulum!
Any Beach Club- You’ll want to either go to public access for the beach or find a beach club that is FREE or has a low minimum. We had our taxi drop us off at CoCo Tulum and just walked through to their beach access with no issues. Laid down our beach towels and tanned for two hours. The beach can be a free move but there are options to use beach clubs that offer food, drinks and cabanas/lawn chairs.
Casa Malca– Casa Malca is Pablo Escobars old mansion turned boutique hotel. The moment we went to check it out was probably the best part of my trip right next to being able to sleep in. The photo ops were endless! Its best to go during the day and early before it gets to packed in order to really bask in the beauty of the mansion.
Azulik Tulum– More breathtaking architecture in Tulum was at Azulik. An eco-friendly and adults only hotel and restaurant with wonderful views. After looking at the menu ahead of time, we decided that we just wanted to stop buy and see if we could grab a drink and take some photos and they let us do just that! If you do want to get dinner there its best to make a reservation ahead of time before leaving for your trip. The restaurant name is Kin Toh.
All taxi rides from your Airbnb or Hotel in the Heart of Tulum to the beach, market or surrounding areas should be 150 Pesos or less nothing more. When it comes to money and money exchange I think you should come to Mexico with Cash in US Dollars and then exchange them in Tulum. We paid $200 round trip for a ride from Cacun Airport to Tulum and vice versa. So we had that money and then brought an extra $300 in USD to exchange over. We did $100 at a time so that we didn’t overspend. There are some places that take Visa cards, but your main source of currency during your trip should be USD or Pesos.
Note: Download a currency app to help with exchange rates so you know just how much you are spending.
What to Wear/ Pack:
You NEED sunblock, OFF! and not a lot of clothes. It’s so humid and hot all at one time that you can sweat even when you are standing in the shade. The mosquitos are ruthless, even 7 days after my trip my 10+ mosquito bites were swollen and itching. Ive just gotten relief this week. Better to be prepared.
Note: You’ll want to check with your cell phone provider to see if you can use your phone without being charged roaming and international fees before leaving for your trip. It just so happens that I have a plan with AT&T that covers Mexico, so I was able to use my phone at any time and anywhere.
